The Hong Kong Prize – Celebrating the Best in Science and Innovation

hongkong prize

The hongkong prize is an award that celebrates the best in science and innovation. It is open to scientists who have significant achievements in scientific research in one of five fields: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing and FinTech. The prize aims to encourage science entrepreneurs to continue exploring and innovate, leveraging Hong Kong’s strengths and contributing to the world.

The prize is awarded based on the quality of the research work, its impact, and contribution to society. It is a prestigious international prize that recognizes the outstanding achievements of scientists from around the world. This year, a total of HK$2 million will be granted to the winning researchers. Besides, the prize winners will be invited to attend a two-day forum in Hong Kong to discuss their latest breakthrough and how they have been able to transform their research into innovative products that benefit the community.

HKUST researchers have received six Special Awards, including the Prize of the Chinese Delegation for Invention and Innovation. One of the winners is a team led by a microbiologist who has developed a non-toxic, less invasive and more efficient treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The other five teams are developing high-performance and cost-efficient batteries, a firm-to-soft intelligent floor mat to prevent elderly fall injury, and an integrated circuit board with superior high-speed transmission performance.

A student from Diocesan Girls’ School (DGS) has won the grand prize at the 2018 Hong Kong Student of the Year Awards, with her multi-talents and all-round efforts in different areas being lauded. The winner, Au Cheuk-yi, said her prize is a “form of recognition” for her hard work and dedication.

The documentary by Donna Ong, narrated by Christopher Law, explores cinema and Hong Kong history through the lens of a man who dominated the cultural scene for decades. Sammo Hung, a martial arts film icon and 2024 Hong Kong Film Awards Lifetime Achievement Award winner, recounts his early days in the industry when he carved out a career through humble beginnings and humility. The award is supported by the Shaw Foundation and the Hong Kong Science Museum.
