Hong Kong’s top athletes have gathered in Paris to compete for glory at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Amidst the euphoria and excitement, they have also been facing various challenges that could undermine their hopes and dreams. Champion Day is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in Hong Kong, showcasing three esteemed Group 1 horse races, including the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Champions Mile and Chairman’s Sprint Prize. The BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize, with the title sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, is aimed at encouraging scientific researchers to persist in innovative exploration. The prize focuses on five fields: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, and FinTech. Each year, experts from all over the world are invited to select outstanding scientific researchers/teams with impressive achievements in the above-mentioned fields for their research and development as well as their applications and commercialization.
In the art sector, the winner of the Hong Kong Arts Prize 2024 is Pakistani artist Sameen Agha for her sculpture A Home Is a Terrible Place to Love. The other shortlisted artists are Hong Kong-based Michelle Fung for her mixed media work Red Bean Stalk, and Demet from the Philippines for his PPE Painting Palette Emulation. The prize ceremony, held in the Four Seasons Hotel, attracted over 1,000 guests. Among them, the winners were awarded their medals and trophies.
At the event, Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po congratulated the winners and thanked them for their positive and irreplaceable contributions to society in the pandemic. He added that professional, fair, objective and balanced media are guardians of the free flow of high-quality information and a critical element for innovation.
During the awards ceremony, a total of 75 prizes were awarded across 17 categories, with 11 of them being won by the Chinese Daily. This is the highest number of wins by any media in the history of the award, which was established in 1986.
In addition to the main prize, nine other special awards were handed out at the event. The best written report prize was awarded to a team from Wong Shiu Chi Secondary School for its study of “Hong Kong Pig Farming Industry during the 1967 Riots”. The other prize winners included:
