As well as the opera house and harbour bridge, Sydney is famed for its swanky pool culture. It has more ocean pools (35) than any other city in the world – and some of them are spectacular. Whether they’re framed by seashells, pointy-nosed dolphins or banded white seagulls that look like they’re fluttering in the sky like the Egyptian bird god Horus, these iconic swim spots are loved by locals and visitors alike.
One of the best, however, is undergoing a major overhaul. The North Sydney Olympic Pool – a longtime favourite of swimmers and bathers, known locally as the ‘old man’s pool’ – is currently closed for renovations that will include a glass wall, new lane markers and an all-new entryway with sleek timber decking. Its reopening is a year later than originally planned, but there’s an upside: the pool’s redesign is being funded by the NSW government to boost public swimming and water fitness.
A similar story is unfolding in western Sydney, where a pool in Parramatta was shut to make way for the new Western Sydney Stadium in April 2017. The Berejiklian government has promised to build a “like-for-like” replacement at a cost of $30 million, which it says will be finished by 2020.
But some residents don’t want the new pool to change too much. Chris Bowden, 39, loves the shabbiness of the old man’s pool and its long history, and is worried that a shiny new modernisation will lead to the loss of the pool’s charm. “It’s got that real Aussie beach feel to it,” he says.
Luckily, there are plenty of other pool options in Sydney. Some of the oldest, and most beautiful, can be found at Manly and Bondi beaches. Other popular destinations include Mosman Bay and the Bronte Pool. The latter is a beautiful natural pool that’s free to use, surrounded by a green parkland setting and boasts stunning views of Sydney harbour.
