The sun is out and Sydney’s ocean pools are open, a welcome relief from the recent swelter. The city’s coveted swim spots range from the infinitely Instagrammable Bondi Icebergs to the more hidden pools found on Sydney’s northern beaches. Whether you want to lounge, exercise, or imagine yourself in a summery coming-of-age film, these sidney pools have something for everyone.
Sydney’s iconic pool culture is not without controversy. A few weeks ago, the city’s councillors voted down a mayoral minute that called for the creation of free netted saltwater pools in Sydney harbour, arguing it was not the bread and butter of local government to take on $60m vanity projects that would not serve the community long-term. In the past 18 months, ocean swimming has skyrocketed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and public rock and ocean pools are in high demand.
This year, the Sydney Metropolitan Water Board will spend $28 million on maintaining and operating its outdoor aquatic centres. The money will be invested in facilities like Parramatta, Ryde and Wentworth Park pools to ensure that these swimming areas are able to operate and remain safe throughout the pandemic.
In a region that is so reliant on outdoor swimming, it’s important to provide the best possible conditions to keep people safe and healthy. This includes providing quality water, educating people on how to stay safe, and ensuring that swimming areas are well-maintained and accessible.
The city of Sydney has a strong record on these issues, with the recent opening of the world-class new Sir John O’Groats Swimming Centre a case in point. This pool is the first of its kind in Australia and reflects the city’s commitment to creating one-of-a-kind aquatic facilities. WTI worked closely with the City of Sydney on the feasibility study, site evaluation and selection, preliminary design, and cost estimates to develop this innovative and sustainable project.
Located just a short walk from Bondi Beach, this pool is a hidden gem. Steep stairs lead down to the water and the pool itself is surrounded by cliffs, making it feel more private than most Sydney pools. This is a great spot for swimmers who prefer to avoid crowds or for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Float in the warm waters and enjoy the views of the surrounding ocean. It’s also a good place to take some time out and relax, with the lush vegetation and tranquility helping to soothe the soul. There’s a kiosk for coffee and snacks, plus a nearby Woollahra gallery to check out. A great spot for a family day out.
